Rakkaat ystävät

Sorry for this, but, hey: it’s already Friday! This is a clear follow-up to the Dr O’Kells Wondrous Beer Translation – but this time, it is the French who are doing it:

Luka one year

This weekend, Luka celebrated his first birthday party. Here he’s pictured in the morning, wondering at the first (but not the last) gift package of the day. He continues to amaze us, this energetic, curious, crazy, wonderful little boy. All the best to the second year, hope it goes as well as the first one!

TV for Mac

Probably the most useful feature in a digital television is the capability to define search terms to run automatic scheduling of recordings. That way, you can e.g. record every piece of “news” or “Buffy Vampire Slayer”, regardless of from which channel and at what time they appear. It is a small and intermediate step towards true VoD (“Video on Demand”), but a necessary one in a broadcast dominated media reality. Continue reading “TV for Mac”

Acer Aspire One unpacking

I have used a subnotebook (a Compaq) way back, but this is our first try into the new “UMPC” category: got Laura Acer Asprire One as a present yesterday. First impressions are rather positive, but I personally think the Linpus Linux Lite OS/desktop is in need of some serious hacking (it is sooo “easy”/limiting), or worth chancing into Ubuntu, but Laura seems happy at the moment so — lets not break it. 🙂 Price: Verkkokauppa.com, 298,90 €. Terrace and pergola project

This summer has mostly been spent in the garden. Our small terrace and pergola project proved to be much more extensive than I thought in the beginning. The part that took longest was making the foundations. It might be that we were a bit overcautious in terms of frost isolation, but it would had been shame if the entire construction would tilt to its side after the first proper winter. I think we moved more than eight tons of earth away Continue reading “Terrace and pergola project”

Triple booting

This is most probably yet another form of wasting time, but for some time I have wanted to have all main varieties of operating systems available in a single workstation. There is some benefit in this (e.g. comparing the performance and usability issues on identical system), but mostly I have been playing with the system just for the fun of it. Tonight I finally got Mac OS X Leopard (using the “Leo4Allv3” hackintosh installation), Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Microsoft Vista living side-by-side in one sweet multiboot harmony, hooray Continue reading “Triple booting”

Mass Effect

Summer and games: not really football or Olympic field sports to my taste, but every now and then I cannot resist a proper RPG adventure. This summer it is Mass Effect from Bioware. I am not so much a fan of first person shooters, but occasional action sequences are ok when they are integrated as parts of a larger, fascinating universe as in Mass Effect. The game is very cinematic, and that sometimes means gameplay locked on rails, but when the outcome works fine as a science fiction movie, I do not complain. Problem is really that as we need to do other things during daytime, it is only nights that are available for gaming… Also fine voice acting, by the way (from Mark Meer/Jennifer Hale for the protagonist, and likes of Martina Sitris, Lance Henriksen and Seth Green in other roles).

Happy holidays!

Happy holidays, soothing summer. Luka and me are here enjoying the brisk wind and breathtaking scenery from the top of Pyynikin näkötorni (the old observation tower on top of Pyynikki ridges). Notice the bag of famous Pyynikki doughnuts (munkki in Finnish)… Link: http://www.munkkikahvila.net/

Thunderous summer

My summer holidays are starting from Midsummer, and just in time arrived thunder, lightning and rain to Finland. A lightning strike close to our home created an electronic impulse that apparently broke our ADSL modem, and this site was couple of days offline. Luckily, nothing else seems broken, and we got a new, identical TeleWell EA-501 v.3 from Verkkokauppa.com in Sunday. Looking at news, we are not alone: there are thunder damages reported from various places. I have a feeling these have been increasing during the last few years… It might be of course that we are just more concerned about the climate change and thus thunderstorms make more of headlines, but then again — it also might be that investing into a telephone line surge protector is a good idea, after all.

Maximum T-8000 CX-CI

31.05.2008

A new digital set-top box: Maximum T-8000 CX-CI (the old Topfield started to be a bit unreliable and out-of-date). This new one has more powerful processor (=faster in certain areas), more HDD, HDMI output and an ethernet connector to the LAN. Minuses so far: no automatic search programming from EPG (this was a TAP add-on in Topfield, hopefully something similar will be developed for Maximum, too) — and an irritating bug: if recording starts when the box is in stand-by, the recording will work ok, but the box will remain unresponsive until you exit the recording. Thus, it is best to keep it turned on all the time and not use stand-by (great, no power save benefits). Otherwise a decent box. More: http://www.5wwwww5.com/maximum/index.php?mforum=maximum
