I was happy to receive Nokia Visiting Professor grant last Thursday – the grant relates to my collaboration with the team of Dr Gareth Schott from University of Waikato, New Zealand. The research project in Waikato is titled “Videogame classification: Assessing the experience of play”. In this photo you can see large part of the grant awardees of the 2011 Nokia Foundation grants, including professor Riitta Hari, the recipient of 2011 Nokia Foundation Award.

Koneen ja ihmisen yhdessäolo aiheuttaa suuria tunteita. Toinen näkee punaista, jos ihmistä verrataan koneeseen. Toinen taas punastuu mielihyvästä tietokonepelien ääressä. Mitä taiteentutkijat oikein ajattelevat ihmisen ja koneen yhdessäolosta — se selviää ERI-Klubin Punakone-illassa!
Illan aikana elokuvatutkimuksen professori Jukka Sihvonen Turun yliopistosta sekä esteetikko ja yliopistonlehtori Max Ryynänen Aalto-yliopistosta valottavat näkemyksiään punakoneesta yllättävistä lähtökohdista käsin.
Sihvonen tarkastelee aihetta otsikolla “Pehmeä kone” ja Ryynänen puolestaan miettii teemaa “Yhteispelin estetiikan” kautta. Digitaalisen kulttuurin ja pelitutkimuksen professori Frans Mäyrä Tampereen yliopistosta puolestaan paneutuu näkökulmaan “Informaatiokone ja ihminen”.
Lisäksi koneisuutta hyödyntävä kuvataiteilija Oona Tikkaoja kertoo töistään ja mediataiteilija Hannele Romppanen yhdessä tanssitaiteilija Helena Romppasen ja muusikko Heikki Tikan kanssa esittävät ensimmäistä kertaa Punakone-teoksensa.
Illan juontaa kirjailija Niina Repo-Kouki. Aulassa on nähtävillä myös osa Tikkaojan installaatiosta Killer Robot vs. Robot Killer.
Vuoden viimeinen ERI-Klubi toteutetaan yhteistyössä Turun yliopiston tutkijoista koostuvan Eetos ry:n kanssa.
ERI-Klubit ovat osa Kulttuuripääkaupunkivuoden ohjelmaa ja Tanssiteatteri ERIn pääyhteistyökumppanina on Turun yliopisto. Mukana ovat myös Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos, Åbo Akademi, tiedekeskus Heureka, Turun yliopiston tieteentekijät -yhdistys ja Eetos ry.

I got my first “out of space” error from iCloud today. It took some googling around to get more light to the inner life of how iCloud backups work. It looks like the service is configured by default to backup all your photos and videos, in addition to all applications, calendar, contacts etc. It does not waste bandwidth and backup space to produce copies of your music files, or OS files, though – supposedly you have access to those bytes otherwise. But in my case it was recorded videos and photos that had bloated the size of backup so that it run over the free 5 gigabyte space limit. If you have also iOS5 Photo Stream turned on like me, you do not probably want to produce yet another copy to the iPhone backup in iCloud. I watched My Neighbour Totoro today with my boys (all three of them, while the youngest had some troubles in concentrating, he is only 5 months old). I sometimes wonder how does it affect your imagination and perception of the world to have access to such nuanced, beautiful works of fantastic art from very early age. I was reading Famous FIve by Enid Blyton and then, at the age of seven, was watching Batman (the campy tv series) and Thunderbirds doll animations from Finnish, black-and-white television. No wonder I grew up to become a gadget geek.
I should write more of Hayao Miyazaki’s work some time. I mentioned it briefly in my 2009 talk, and the related short paper, Japanese Fantasy and the East-West Dialectic (2010), but watching how traces of Eastern Shintoism mix freely with the great tradition of fantastic imaginary and storytelling (elements folk tales, even Alices Adventures in Wonderland are evident in Totoro), there is so much more to be said.
iOS 5 and the new iPhone 4S are not without their bugs, even while mostly being on the ‘it just works’ department. One rather nasty one that just jumped on me is the iPhone camera & camera roll application crash issue: the monent you try to access any of your photos, or when you try to shoot a new one, the app just crashes. This issue has been around in various forms for more than a year now, it appears, so I am not sure this is related to iOS 5 or recent hardware. Apple care appears to either recommend totally wiping your device to factory settings, or they have even replaced the malfunctioning phone with a new one. There appears to be a fix, however, that solved the issue at least in my case. You need to download software (e.g. iExplorer) that you can use to delete any ‘sqlite’ marked metadata files related to your photos, and then let iOS rebuild its photo database. I am not sure what is going wrong, but I truly hope Cupertino will take notice and fix their OS soon.
