Now that rain has melted away the snow cover, it is apparent that we have entered ‘marras’, the season of death. Dark falls, tiny lights are set up to fight its domain, only accenting its depth.

  1. It’s dark here too. We (island of Berneray) are a little further south than Tampere, but out in an exposed part of the Atlantic Ocean. Windy much of the time:

It doesn’t get light now till mid-morning, and it is usually dark by 4:30pm. Worse for the schoolkids. They have a long trip – 75 minutes – to school. At this time of year, they never see the island in daylight on schooldays.

  2. Hi John,

Living in peripheria has its downsides, particularly when you face the forces of nature in the cold and in the dark. But the beauty of it all can be striking as well.
